American River Parkway Stewards
UUSS has continued for several years to adopt a mile of the Parkway and is now committed to performing volunteer work on Mile 6-7 north which stretches roughly from the Campus Commons Golf Course downstream to near the border with Cal Expo.
Unless changed by circumstances, our regularly-scheduled activity begins each Second Saturday at 9 a.m. in Daylight Savings Time and 10 a.m. in Standard Time. Our UU volunteers meet off Howe Avenue in the parking area at the end of Northrop Avenue next to the levee, behind Panera Restarurant. At 9 a.m. (or 10 a.m. as noted above), we disperse throughout the UU mile between the levee and the riverbank and clean up our mile. Trash bags and latex gloves are provided.
We work for 1-1/2 hours and meet back at the starting point for a photograph; then, most of us tend to go to Panera for refreshments, food and conversation. We average about six people at each monthly cleanup, although there may be more or fewer on any given day.
There's no specific obligation to participate for any of our individual volunteers; my suggestion is simply to do "what we can; when we can" in the context of all of the activities that each of us must balance. If you'd like to be added to the e-mail reminder list for UUSS Parkway stewardship activities, feel free to send an email to me. I hope to see you on the Parkway!
