Meet the Members of the Board of Trustees
Tina Chiginsky, Board President, joined UUSS in 1995. She is a legislative advocate for a state agency and has degrees in journalism and health services administration. She served in the Army and has volunteered in her childrens’ schools, the Girl Scouts, and the community. She has also helped the church in many capacities – RE Committee member and teacher, Worship Leader and board member. Tina is honored to be this year's UUSS board president. “It is a way for me to give something back to the people who have helped me and my family through rough and smooth times, and helped us grow spiritually.”
Kathryn Canan, Vice President, has been a member of UUSS since 2001. She is the former chair of the Adult Enrichment Committee and served on the ministerial search task force that brought Rev. Roger Jones here. She enjoys playing early music on baroque flute and recorder, and she plays modern flute in pit orchestras for Light Opera Sacramento and Runaway Stage Productions. She recently earned a master's degree in liberal arts at CSUS with a thesis on Anglo-Saxon medicine. She is a freelance Latin tutor and writer, and she teaches recorder in her home in Citrus Heights.
Cathy Whitney, Treasurer, has been a member of UUSS since 2002. She came to sing in the choir and found a spiritual home. She has served on the music committee, the Choir Director search committee, the Money Counting team, the Stewardship drive and as Worship Leader. She retired from Mercy Hospital where she worked as a Medical Lab Technologist, and also retired from a tax practice partnership with Linda Killick, her life partner of 28 years.
Meg Burnett, Board Secretary, has been a member of UUSS since 1986, and a life-long UU. She will be graduating from her 40-year career as a special educator this year, and looks forward to the “Sweet Chapter” of life. She looks forward to dedicating more of her energy to making UUSS a continuing vibrant, growing community. She brings vocal music, photography, and multiple other interests to share with our UUSS family, and has served on the Music Committee, Choir, and Religious Services Committee as a Worship Leader. Her goal is to continue to grow in faith, service, and friendship.
John Abbott, Member-at-Large, joined UUSS in 1994. He is the Board's appointee to, and has been an elected member of, the Endowment Trust. He has made several presentations on Unitarian and Universalist history to new members, and with Eric Ross, to current members. John retired as an attorney with the State Board of Equalization in 2004. He is a member of the Sacramento State (MA history, 2004) alumni board of directors. He is married to Lori Abbott Moreland and has three adult children.
Linda Clear, Member-at-Large, has been a member of UUSS since 1995. She came to UUSS on a recommendation from her sister who has been an active UU for over 30 years. During the time she has been a member of UUSS she has served as the Chair of the Membership Committee, Vice President of the Board of Trustees, and President of the Board of Trustees and worked on several and chaired one Stewardship drive. Linda also has represented UUSS at several General Assemblies and was a Registration Volunteer at the General Assembly held in Portland, Oregon. Linda recently co-chaired the fund drive to help raise a portion of dues owed to the UUA and PCD. Linda retired from the Department of Motor Vehicles after 30 years and now spends her time babysitting her grandchildren, doing Pet Assisted Therapy with her dog Neptune and is looking forward to again getting involved with activities at UUSS. Linda is married to Dennis Clear and has two beautiful grandchildren, Jake and Samantha.
Carrie Cornwell, Member-at-Large, has a life-long association with UUSS, having grown up in the congregation. She has previously served two years on the Board as Vice President and then as President. Carrie was on the search committee that brought the Rev. Doug Kraft here, is a trustee to the UUSS Endowment, has chaired or co-chaired the stewardship drive multiple times, advises the Senior High Youth Group, and has served as a worship leader. Carrie works as Chief Consultant to the Transportation and Housing Committee of the California State Senate. An adjunct professor of economics at Sacramento City College and Sierra College, she is active in numerous community organizations. Carrie earned a Bachelors in Economics from UCLA and Masters in Public and International Affairs from Princeton. She lives in Land Park with her husband Greg Redmond and their son Alec.
Linda Klein, Member-at-Large, was raised a Methodist, but the first church she joined as an adult was the Unitarian Fellowship in Chico, where she became President and Program Coordinator. After moving to Sacramento, she joined UUSS in 1992. Linda has become an invaluable member of UUSS and is currently serving a second term as Vice President of the Board of Trustees. She has been on the Religious Services Committee and Membership Committee, as well as providing the Unigram articles for the UUSSer of the Month. Linda and her husband, Dave Thomas, have eight adult children between them and enjoy hiking and traveling. After 40 years of teaching, Linda has retired and is lending her expertise to various charitable organizations.
Lisa Malkin, Member-at-Large, has been a member of UUSS since 2000 . She and her husband Gary have two young sons, Connor and Craig. She previously served on the Board as secretary and has been active in the Religious Education program, serving on the Religious Education Committee and teaching classes for several years. She is currently serving as treasurer on the Board of Trustees.
