About Theater One

Forty years ago before adopting Theater One as their name, the theater group of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento (then called First Unitarian Church) was performing plays for the community under the auspices of the Family Service Association. Casts from the 1960s included minister Ford Lewis, Barbara Slemmons, and Julie Anastasio, and were directed by Barbara Lewis.

Since the 1970s, Theater One has produced one or two plays each year. Some have been original scripts by members Rev. Ted Webb, Helen Mirov, Helen Graham, Shirley Ranck, Fran Nikas, Carl Schmitthausler, and Gayle Voeller, and others by playwrights Anton Chekov, Neil Simon, David Hare, Tennessee Williams, Agatha Christie, Jules Feiffer, Thornton Wilder, Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, Arthur Miller, Brian Friel.

Current UUSS members Anna Andrews and Jeane & Jack Davidson appeared in a number of productions, and professional actors including Tony Award-winner Tom Cayler, Gillen Morrison, Mary MacDonald-Lewis, and Noel Webb have performed with Theater One. All those interested in theater are welcome to participate.

Theater One is a member of SARTA, the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance.
