Real wealth is things that enrich our lives: healthy children,supportive relationships, beautiful environment, time for leisure and reflection, and so forth. Phantom wealth is things like money that have no intrinsic value but which, by societal consent, can be exchanged for real resources. The confusion between real and phantom wealth has long distorted the Christmas season. Today it threatens to turn our democracy into an oligarchy. | |
