May 20, 2012     “Healthy Chaos”      Rev. Doug Kraft

Whatever patterns we expect in life, we can be sure it won’t be exactly that way. What we experience as chaos is not always unhealthy. Our summer schedule resumes today, and this is the farewell day for Religious Education classes. The Congregational Meeting starts after the service.

May 27, 2012     "Reflections on Loss"     Rich Howard

We are all subject to the winds of gain and loss.  How we react to these shifting winds determines whether we grow or suffer. This morning we will honor Memorial Day with a look at how we can deepen our lives by living with loss.

About Rich Howard: Rich has been a member of UUSS since 1989. As a former Worship Leader and leader of our annual Dia de los Muertos Service, he invites us to open our hearts to whatever visits our lives. He is also a community mentor with Sacramento Insight Meditation.

June 3, 2012                      “Rest”                  Rev. Doug Kraft

A sticker on my son’s backpack says, “When you don’t care where you are, any place is home.” As we move into summer we’ll reflect on what truly is restful and restorative and the spiritual home we can carry with us.

June 10, 2012                    “Dialog Service”                              Rev. Doug Kraft

This will be my last service on campus before my summer break. (I’ll be doing a service at our Family Camp the next Sunday.) The Dialogue service focuses on the concerns that are most on your heart and mind. There will be a question box at the church to receive your questions. I won’t look at any of them until the service itself. Question that have a strong pull for you help pull a greater wisdom from all of us. All questions are fair.

June 17, Father’s Day      “Beyond Control:  Embracing the Divine Embracing”

 Rev. Roger Jones

Nothing against my father, or the many dads we know and love, but the western tradition’s idea of an Omnipotent Father God has been … “a mistake,” said theologian Charles Hartshorne.  While many are away at the all-ages UUSS Camp in Alta, let’s consider the humane and ecological ideas of Process Theology, developed by UU scholars and other religious liberals.

June 24, 2012     “Whose Body Is This Anyway?”    (LGBT Equality As a Question of Embodiment)

Adam Dyer, Starr King School for the Ministry

As a professional massage therapist, Adam seeks to help people engage and invest in their bodies in positive and fulfilling ways.  He studied English and music at Princeton University.  At the University of Florida he was a choreographer and adjunct lecturer in theater and dance.  Now his seminary studies center around embodiment, sexuality and religion.  An accomplished vocalist, dancer and movement instructor, Adam has appeared on Broadway, in national tours, and can be seen in the popular fitness series P90x.  Post-sermon discussion 11:40 AM.

July 1, 2012         “UU Heresies:  It’s Not What You Think! Tee Shirt Theology Sunday”

Rev. Roger Jones

Let’s reflect on what religious liberalism really means.  What do the goals of hospitality and inclusion require of us?  For this annual tee-shirt service, wear a shirt that proclaims your faith, values, hopes, or commitments in this world.  (No partisan political message or words unfit for children, please.)

July 8, 2012         Emily Fisher, UUSS Member

Emily is a lawyer, singer, AIDS Ride fundraiser, cradle Mormon, UU Buddhist, member of our Lay Ministry team, and seminarian at Starr King School for the Ministry.

July 15, 2012       "Who Gets What:  Economic Injustice in America"

Bruce Hamilton, UU Church of Berkeley

A native of Nebraska, Bruce Hamilton ran for Congress there against the war in Vietnam and served in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia.  He's been a UU church administrator, a director of a state bar association, and a nonprofit executive for  affordable housing and aging services.  Now retired, he attends church in Berkeley, where his sister is a minster, and he volunteers for many campaigns.  As a grandfather, Bruce worries about the future we are creating for all children.  He works and hopes for a renewal of economic democracy and justice.

August 5, 2012       “Gospel of the Underachiever”     Rev. Roger Jones with College-Bound Teens

Today we say farewell to those from our Youth Group leaving home for college. After all the efforts and stress to bring them to this point, their parents may not welcome the sermon title. But accepting our imperfections with humor and love might give us just enough success to have a rich life. (What-ever!)

You can listen to or read sermons given at UUSS by selecting Sermons and Podcasts from the Sermons menu.
