Bill Durston, MD, is an emergency physician who has treated innumerable gunshot victims during his more than 35 years of practice in Sacramento, California. Bill retired from working in the ER in 2014 but continues to practice medicine as member of the UC Davis Volunteer Clinical Faculty, serving as a preceptor in a student run free clinic.
Before becoming a physician, Bill was an expert marksman in the United States Marine Corps, serving in combat in Vietnam, where he was decorated for courage under fire. Bill has been active in the area of firearm injury prevention throughout his medical career, including serving as the injury prevention chairperson for the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, as chairperson of the Firearm Injury Prevention Task Force of the American Academy of Emergency Physicians, and as president of the Sacramento Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR). Bill has also served on the national PSR Board of Directors. In March of 2016, he co-founded a new national non-profit organization, Americans Against Gun Violence, and currently serves as president of that organization.
Bill has provided expert testimony on firearm related bills at hearings of the California legislature, he has spoken as a member of expert panels in 2014 and 2016 at side events of the United Nations Biennial Meetings of States on behalf of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPNW) concerning the illicit trade in small arms, and he has published numerous articles concerning the need to take definitive action to curb the epidemic of firearm related deaths and injuries that afflicts the United States.
The Humanist Association includes many friends of UUSS and it used to hold monthly meetings in our Fahs Classroom before making its home at the Reason Center. Many thanks for UUSS member Carl Sweet for alerting us to this important program.
