joann3Enjoy Lectio Divina poetry reading and discussion with JoAnn Anglin, Monday, March 4th at 10:00 a.m.  Attend via Zoom at uuss.org/online.

JoAnn writes writes that the “poem is not available online. It’s composed by a Bay Area poet (and UU) who agreed to let us use this for our discussion. I think it is reasonable to assume that some of us are concerned about the possible outcome of this coming year’s elections. But do we fear the possible end of our representative democracy? And do we think this poem addresses that concern? Let’s address this concern and our coping mechanisms as we contemplate our changing political world.”

“The Death Knell Tolling: Reflecting on January 6, 2021” by Robert L. Smith

When, as a schoolboy in the early sixties,
I rose to pledge allegiance to the flag,
I still was much impressed by ceremonies;
I held my wealth in a brown paper bag.
I’d just turned seventeen when Watergate
Exposed the system for the sham it was—
The President a scheming reprobate,
And justice under siege without just cause.
On January sixth, three years ago,
I saw the dream descend to degradation,
The promise of the founders rendered hollow,
The death knell tolling for a broken nation.
These days, the air is still, the light is calm,
The sunlit silence ticking like a bomb.
