Update from Linnea, age 10

Today’s post comes to you from Linnea Stanton, age 10:
Today we did a six hour meeting with the Indian staff of the partnering organization. We talked about community health and the group shared about how important health is in preventing slavery. When someone is sick, often the family will go into debt to pay hospital and doctor’s bills, and then owe a debt and get trapped in slavery. At the training Patty also taught skills for the teachers – showing them how to help children who have been rescued from slavery and often struggle in school. Education also becomes an important way to help them from getting trapped in slavery. Meg talked about how trauma affects people and how they can recover from slavery.
At the meeting we put up the tree and told them how the Freedom Club made it and thanked them for making a change in the world.
After the meeting we went to a store and bought Indian clothes. The streets at night were very busy, loud, and dusty. We took an auto-rickshaw to get around.
Here in India it feels free. It’s a very calm country. They don’t take things as seriously as America. The laws aren’t very strict: the red lights don’t matter, they honk, and you can drive along the lines in the road or in the wrong direction. Everyone is very kind and helpful. Everywhere you stop they help you with directions. They are very kind and friendly. They often want to take pictures of you because to them it is like a purple person walking in America. The country is very easy-going. It’s lovely!

I’ve been slow to realize there is news of your trip posted on the uuss site. I’m so appreciative of what you all are doing! Linnea, I especially liked reading your depiction of life in India in contrast to your take on things in the U.S. Thanks for sharing your insights.
Thank you so much for your post. I am just reading it today, the day before Thanksgiving. Reading your words has made a difference in how I will celebrate Thanksgiving this year. I am thankful for what you are doing, for what the Freedom Club does, and that our church is involved in such a wonderful and worthy goal as freeing slaves. Thank you for all you do!
