ICE contract in Sacramento County voted out!

There are times to celebrate the small victories that chip away at the injustice of ICE in our communities.  Today was one such day.  The Board of Supervisors voted to end the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) contract that allowed people to be housed at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center.  RCCC is one of the worst facilities in California that has worked to dehumanize every single person who went through it.  The Sacramento community really came out to oppose the contract and the Immigrant Justice group at UUSS was part of it.  It was a tense meeting with many speakers.  The vote wasn’t taken until 6 pm.  But a 3 to 2 vote ended the contract. The 18 million in the photo refers to the amount that our Sheriff has been given in federal funds to incarcerate immigrants, many of whom spent months and years awaiting a court hearing in the backlogged immigration courts, and many of whom had legitimate and legal avenues to stay in the U.S.  Their detention cost so much to so many families and to the taxpayer.  This is what pushback looks like against escalating xenophobia and racism.

A day to celebrate! Some of our group at the BOS June 5 2018

  1. Is your organization aware of any private physicians that would make a visit to an inmate being detained at this facility. He will be moved within a week and we are seeking a doctor willing to visit him there. His ICE officer has approved an outside physician exam him.

    Thank you
