Sacramento ACT Environmental Justice Committee: Statement on Fires in the Amazon

We stand in solidarity with the indigenous people of the Amazon. They are losing their homes, their culture, their spiritual connection to the land. Everything.

We are grieving with you.

And the effects go far beyond Brazil.  The Amazon is called “the lungs of the planet” and makes more than 20% of the oxygen we breathe.

If our rainforests disappear our climate would be drastically altered affecting everything from farms to drinking water.

Communities of color will be disproportionately affected by climate change. Heat waves, choking air pollution, fires and floods prove more devastating for poorer communities with fewer resources and which tend to be communities of color. In most climate change scenarios the impact on these communities will be catastrophic.

As members of the faith community who care about climate change and economic justice, we must take steps toward addressing systemic injustices and moving toward greater sustainability.  Join us in this sacred work on September 7 when the Rev. Dr. Ambrose Carroll, Senior Pastor of Berkeley’s Church by the Side of the Road and founder of Green the Church, will share his vision of this transformative work.
