In Loving Memory

eileenRev. Eileen B. Karpeles passed away at age 93 on Oct. 25 in Millersville, MD. She served UUSS as interim minister from Jan. 1989 until June 1990), making her the first woman to serve in ordained ministry at UUSS after more than a century of male clergy. She had been a teacher before pursuing a call to ministry and getting an M.Div. from Starr King School for the Ministry. After she retired from the ministry she returned to Sacramento to live and was an active member and volunteer leader at UUSS during the ministry of Rev. Doug Kraft.

Her daughter Tamia says that Eileen’s friends were all over the country, so the family plans a small family occasion. However, they would love to have any written reminiscences to read at that time. Feel free to pass along any written messages to Rev. Lucy Bunch or me, or get her email address from us.

Memorial contributions to honor Eileen or any person dear to UUSS may be made to the Heritage Fund or Endowment Trust.

One Response to “In Loving Memory”

  1. Eileen became a very important part of this congregation after she returned to Sacramento in retirement. She wrote and delivered a number of sermons that I still remember. Though she was stubbornly independent, and had a wry (sometimes cutting) sense of humor, she could also be very caring and kind. As young adults, both she and I had briefly been English teachers, so we started a writing group around 15 years ago that is still (occasionally) in existence. In her mid-80’s, she drove cross-country alone — several times! Not long before her death, she left a message on our phone saying the end was near, and she was ready to go. She also said she wished she were in Sacramento, with the people at UUSS she loved.
