Thelma White passed away last week after a series of strokes in recent yeras and a recent fall. She was 90 years old and had lived in a series of retirement and assisted living facilities.
Thelma’s memorial service will be at UUSS at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 18. Rev. Lucy Bunch will officiate. Our Memorial Receptions volunteers will welcome your help with serving refreshments, bringing finger foods, or making a monetary donation to help cover the cost. Her sons and her daughter in law appreciate the support of Thelma’s spiritual community.
Memorial contributions may be made in Thelma’s honor to the UUSS Heritage Fund or the Religious Education Fund.
Did you know Thelma?
She was a “feisty lady” with a twang in her voice. She joined UUSS in 1972 as a single working mother. In retirement she joined the Women’s Alliance at UUSS. Thelma was a musician, artist, artisan–and an organizer who loved to throw a party.
Have you admired our big, industrial gas oven and range? There’s a metal plaque above it noting Thelma’s role in getting it; I led the dedication for it nearly 7 years ago.
Have you been to the December holiday tree-trimming party at UUSS? Thelma started that many years ago. When I started here as Family Minister in 2008, she had to give it up due to a stroke but she gave me specific instructions and it came off well. We’ve had the holiday party nearly every December but are seeking an organizing team for 2016. We have guidance and some veteran party hosts. Let Rev. Roger know if you are interested in carrying on this legacy.
Annie Kempees recalls when they traveled to Hollywood, Florida, in 1991 for the General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association. I recall when she would stop by my office to tell me a new idea with much enthusiasm, always keeping a positive attitude about the ways to bring more joy to life and to other people.
UUSS is a better community for her presence and her many gifts.

Thelma was my friend for many years. As she ceased to drive I enjoyed collecting her on the occasional Sunday to bring her to church. She was a fiesta woman with a full sense of herself. I will miss her.
