Hello musical friends:

Thanks once again to folks who send me such good ‘stuff’ to share! Thanks to our dear Joann Anglin, who sent me an inspiring, thoughtful article from the Washington Post about our need for music at this time in our world.

Pat Skeels shares a short, fun, Sinatra-esque version of “New York, New York” with fun post-election lyrics from the Stephen Colbert show:

My ‘spiritual’ moment tonight reminds us that we still have work to do. We’ve heard plenty recently – perhaps too much — about the election, but this story brings it closer to home: Our daughter Maya shared a Facebook message posted by her ex-boyfriend (and still long-time good friend), a charming California-born, bilingual son of immigrants. Eddie Vargas (not his real name) is a friendly, experienced professional waiter at an upscale eatery in Folsom. He gave impeccable service with a smile to an older white couple on a recent dinner shift. After they left, he found no tip at all – only the words “go back to Mexico” scrawled on the tab. We haven’t yet arrived at “e pluribus unum” (out of many, one).

I close with a moving pre-Covid concert performance by the Sacramento Master Singers, in part so you can enjoy and remember the power of choral singing — and see UUSS friends you know like Rev. Lucy, Celia, Michelle Dunnaway, drummer Tom Voigt, and me. It’s “All of Us” by Caig Hella Johnson, from an oratorio about the murder of Mathew Shepard.
