Remembering the loud braying of these orange-faced geese on the Parkway, and considering the contents and style of much of the 24 hour cable news cycle, brought to mind the prose poem “Desiderata”*.  Written in the 1920s by Max Ehrmann, “Desiderata” was my father’s favorite poem.  Dad kept it on the wall in his office for many years and and at home after he retired.  Despite many challenges, I think he pretty much lived by its principles, and I am grateful to him for his example.  Perhaps you recall the first three stanzas which seem particularly timely to me now:

“Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.  As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.  If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.”

Here’s hoping you’re able to go placidly amid the noise and haste, and experience the peace in silence some time today.
