The next racial justice conversation, Reimagining Public Safety (first of a series on this topic) Monday, January 4th at 7 pm, on the Racial Justice Zoom link (not the main UUSS Zoom).
Below are the resources for the conversation:
1. Video: Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich explains how we are living through the culmination of forty years of increasing social control and decreasing social investment – a trend which, given the deep-seated history of racism in the United States, falls disproportionately on Black people, indigenous people, and people of color. (7 minutes)
2. PDF: From the City of Oakland: The purpose of the Reimagining Public Safety Taskforce is to rapidly reimagine and reconstruct the public safety system in Oakland by developing a recommendation to increase community safety through alternative responses to calls for assistance, and investments in programs that address the root causes of violence and crime (such as health services, housing, jobs, etc), with a goal of a 50% reduction in the OPD General Purpose Fund (GFP) budget allocation.
3. Video: Policing in America needs to change. Trust me, I’m a cop: Renee Mitchell at TEDxOxbridge (12:51)
4. Re-imagining. Public Safety: Prevent Harm and Lead with the Truth. A five-step policy plan for policing in America
