Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) Sacramento is launching its first Study & Action: Families class for families to learn to discuss race and racism together. It is designed with white identifying participants in mind, with the intent of guiding them to understand the ways in which their whiteness has made them complicit in the systems of oppression we are now fighting against and help them interrupt this cycle with their children.
Children (ages 12 and under) and their parents/guardians will attend the sessions together to start these conversations, along with some engaging activities. While each session builds on the next, you do not need to attend them all. Each session will have a different theme. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Class goals include:
- Build confidence around talking about difficult topics with children such as police brutality, everyday racism, and white supremacy.
- Give concrete ways to address these topics with children in age-appropriate ways that do not support white supremacy.
- Give tools to evaluate the media (e.g. books, TV, movies) children consume and start conversations around the problematic aspects.
- Get children involved in the racial justice movement and local actions.
- Connect families with similar values that would like to show up for racial justice.
