Refugee Support – How To Volunteer With IRC

1) GENERAL VOLUNTEER INTEREST
If you were UNABLE to attend our August 26th orientation and want to volunteer, please sign up with IRC online as an individual and you will receive a link to sign up for a phone interview, or will receive an invitation to a general information session as follows:
- Please review IRC Sacramento’s Volunteer Opportunities to learn more about available openings and what could be the best fit for you!
- Once you identify a couple areas you’d be most interested in, we invite you to apply online here. In the online application, please list your top interest areas, availability, and upload your resume as a PDF.
- Please let us know that you are doing this by sending an email to .
If you DID attend our August 26th orientation, please complete the online application as you were briefed to here. For the question ‘How did you hear about the IRC?’ enter ‘OTHER’ and, when asked to describe, enter ‘UUSS Sacramento.’ Don’t forget to upload a PDF file of your resume and send an email to to let us know your status.
2) BACKGROUND CHECK CONTRIBUTION ($30)
Submit your $30 payment for your background check directly to IRC, or drop it off at our table on Sundays and we will send it in for you.
Whenever a background check is submitted, it must include the Applicant’s Full Name (on check or denoted with cash) and the exact amount ($30).
Checks ($30) must be received before the IRC can begin to process the background check.
Cash or checks -made out to the International Rescue Committee– are acceptable payments.

3) PROCESS FROM HERE
From here, the process is: IRC receives your $30 payment for the background check, the request is then submitted and Hire Right, the company who conducts the background check, will contact you via email to fill out basic information. Once you submit the information, it takes 3-7 business days to process. Once the background check has been processed, IRC will receive the results and contact you with next steps.
4) GENERAL ORIENTATION
The General Orientation only happens AFTER you have cleared the background check. Right now, orientations are held every Thursday at 3:00 p.m. and last approximately 2 hours. Participants must bring their driver’s license and a copy of their insurance card, as well as complete basic paperwork during the orientation.
If you attended our August 26th orientation, IRC Sacramento has a record of your attendance and will note that this step has already been completed.
The IRC office is not far from UUSS; just across Howe Avenue on Hurley Way.

My name is Barbara Lee Hugo.I heard about the international Rescue Group through the UUSS church.I might
be interested in volunteering for this group if I can be of any help.I am a registered Art Therapist,my work has been with emotional disturbed adolescents[at risk youths]and with sexual abused children.I am now retired and making my own art and exhibiting locally.Many years ago i worked[as a volunteer]with the `Experiment in International Living`[head quarters in Putney Vermont]placing International students with local families.My family and I hosted about 14 students in our home.
