May 31st is the 200th birthday of poet Walt Whitman, who wrote using plain words and familiar images to highlight the glory of ordinary life, the goodness of people, and the blessing of human sensuality. During the Civil War, he was a volunteer visitor at soldiers’ hospitals. On this Memorial Day Sunday, let’s consider the contradictions he made and celebrated.
